Salt & Light Overview
Week 1: Sermon on the Mount
Bible: Matthew 5:1-12; Matthew 5:13-16; Matthew 5:14-16;
Bottom Line: Jesus has called you to be the salt and light of your school.
What’s That to Me? Students are about to return to school, and it’s important for them to understand that Jesus calls us to be different from the world—to stand out as light and salt so others want to know about him. Teens can be the salt and light in their everyday lives as school.
Week 2: Why Should I Care About Others?
Bible: John 13:1-5; John 13:12-15
Bottom Line: We serve because Jesus has served us
What’s That to Me? Students may wonder why it’s important to serve others, and they may struggle with doing it out of obligation or for other imperfect reasons. This lesson will help them understand that we serve others because Jesus served us.
Week 3: Who Is My Neighbor?
Bible: Matthew 22:37-39; Luke 10:25-29; Luke 10:31-37; John 13:35
Bottom Line: Go and love your neighbor as yourself.
What’s That to Me? Students may not think they have a lot to offer others when it comes to love and support. But when the story of the Samaritan is a great way to help them understand they have the ability to positively help their neighbors—and that’s what Jesus wants them to do. They’ll also realize that the “neighbors” Jesus is talking about may come from unexpected places.
Week 4: Gifted to Serve
Bible: Ephesians 2:10; 1 Peter 4:10; 1 Corinthians 12:4-6
Bottom Line: God gives every believer spiritual gifts to help him or her be salt and light.
What’s That to Me? Students may not have ever really thought about their areas of giftedness—or considered that they have gifts. This lesson will help them see that our gifts are from God, and he intends for us to use the to build up his Kingdom.
A Real BFF Overview
Week 1: Choosing Your Friends
Bible: 2 Corinthians 6:14-15; Proverbs 13:20-21; Luke 15:1-7; 1 Corinthians 15:33
Bottom Line: A real BFF is someone who loves God as much as you do.
What’s That to Me? To students, friends are all-important—but even more important than having friends is choosing good friends. For students, it can be confusing to know what to look for in a real friend. And as God tells us, it’s important to choose carefully.
Week 2: Popularity and Fitting in With the World
Bible: Romans 2:11; Luke 9:25; Proverbs 16:18; Luke 14: 7-14
Bottom Line: A real BFF lives for God, not the world.
What’s That to Me? Students often believe that making friends mean they must work to fit in. Popularity lures them into acting differently and doing things they might not otherwise do. It’s important for students to learn that God doesn’t call us to fit in with the general population—he wants us to stand out for him!
Week 3: Your Community
Bible: Ecclesiastes 4:9:12; Acts 2:42-47; Hebrews 10:24-25
Bottom Line: A real BFF isn’t just one person; it’s also a community of believers.
What’s That to Me? Students may be so focused on having that one BFF that they don’t realize it’s important to surround ourselves with a community of BFFs. Being in a community means we have support, love, and friendship encircling us.
Week 4: Friends Help Friends Through Suffering
Bible: 1 Corinthians 15:3; 1 Peter 5:10; Romans 5:3-5; Proverbs 18:24; John 15:13
Bottom Line: A real BFF will suffer with you like Jesus did.
What’s That to Me? This lesson is key to help students understand that real friends stick with them when times get hard. They don’t only show up when things are fine. And, real friends are willing to suffer with and for their friends, just as Jesus suffered for us on the cross.
Week 1: Made in His Image
Bible: Psalm 139:13-17
Bottom Line: You are uniquely and wonderfully made by the Creator.
Week 2: Loved & Valued
Bible: 1 Peter 2:24; Romans 5:8; John 3:16; John 10:27-30
Bottom Line: You are more loved and valued than you can imagine.
Week 3: ID in JC (or New Identity)
Bible: 2 Corinthians 5:17, Acts 9, Galatians 5:22-23
Bottom Line: My identity is based on who God says I am, not what the world says.
Week 4: Let’s See Some ID
Bible: John 13:34-35; Colossians 3:12-17; Galatians 5:13-14
Bottom Line: The world will know my new identity by the way I love my neighbor.
